WOVEN WINDOWS
May 2022. Sky's the Limit Observatory and Nature Center in Twentynine Palms, CA. 17' h x 40'w x 3'd
Funded by a grant from the California Arts Council, Woven WIndows is a project of Mil-tree, a community-based non-profit that works to bring veterans, active duty military, and civilians together through art and dialogue, to help transform the wounds of war.
For the Woven Windows project, individuals from these populations came together over three weekends to learn about the human and natural history of the land, to weave a monumental sculpture (using plant material culled from environmental restoration projects), and finally to hear moon stories of the native Cahuilla and Serrano tribes, attach personal notes and tokens to the sculpture, and silently witness the rising full moon (in eclipse) through the windows that we created. Our focus was on creative collaboration, community-building, and personal growth rather than making a refined sculpture.
