GATELESS GATES. 2019. Rancho La Puerta, Tecate, Mexico.
Over the course of a week, with small groups of participants coming and going throughout, collaborators used natural materials collected on site to create something with no direction or plan - an experiment in collaborative creativity. With a focus on process rather than product, the intention was to simply give free reign to intuition, and then to reflect on our individual and collective experiences. There were no guidelines, no instructions, and also no talking - the collaboration took place without words.
Discussing the experience afterwards, there was a strong consensus among participants that what we created felt something like a memorial or a burial ground. We did not know at the time that this very spot had been selected by the property owner as a future site for memorials, benches, statuary, and other remembrances of departed loved ones.
