GATE OPTION 1: WOVEN STICKS
Two vertical woven stick structures, separated by an open space of about 5 feet, so that the front and rear layers can each be illuminated by a different color light (as shown in sketch) . The highest point of the sculpture should be at least the same height as the top of the iron gate. Requires collaboration between myself and lighting designer.

GATE OPTION 2: SOGETSU
Sogetsu is a modern (20th Century) iteration of ikebana – it retains the spirit of traditional Ikebana but allows for total freedom when it comes to materials and designs. I can bring my own plant material, use material from Lotusland, or combine the two. The sample shown in the images is about 1/3 to 1/4 the width of the piece I would want do in front of the gate. Requires collaboration between myself and lighting designer.

GATE OPTION 3: WIRE BIRDS
A sculpture made of heavy gauge steel wire, showing songbirds of Santa Barbara, on the ground and perched a tree. The gate (behind the sculpture) would need to be covered with an opaque white cloth. I’m not sure that I can execute this in such a way that the sculpture is both stable and safe under all weather conditions, and does not cast distracting shadows on the white backdrop. One option would be to use an actual tree instead of wire for the structure that holds the birds. TBD.
