GASSHO 2. 2019. 12'6" h x 37' x 49' . Steel and stone. Permanent installation at Sky's The Limit Observatory and Nature Park, in Twentynine Palms, CA.
GASSHO 2 is in large part the same sculpture as GASSHO , which was transported from Philadelphia to Twentynine Palms, CA and installed at Sky's The Limit Observatory and Nature Park, adjacent to the entrance to Joshua Tree National Park. The sculpture is adjustable so that the sun dial and solar calendar functions can be accurate at any latitude, and therefore the piece takes a slightly different shape in Twentynine Palms as compared to Philadelphia. Another change is the addition of a pyramid of local stones set among the three legs of the sculpture, as well as a nearby pile of stones provided so that visitors can make their own stone arrangements. The stone pyramid embodies the way gravity turns mountains to stones and then sand, which eventually compresses and becomes rock again, and rises up in the form of mountains - time is simultaneously cyclical and linear. In the photo directly below the shadow of the gnomon crosses a square marker on the diagonal, indicating that it is 4pm.
