BEN ALLANOFF SCULPTURE
BOWING KOKESHI.  2025.   10'h x 22'w x 8'd.  Bamboo.  Togattaonsen, Miyagi, Japan.
The little mountain town of Togattaonsen in Miyagi prefecture is the birthplace of Kokeshi wooden dolls, which remain popular throughout Japan more than 150 years after they were first introduced.  I was invited to Togattaonsen to create an installation, and chose to honor this history by using  bamboo to weave a sculpture in the town square. The piece depicts,  in negative space, two kokeshi-like figures bowing to one another.
